Programme Details and Expectations
The programme will deliver theory and practical components. Fishing is a labour-intensive business and the majority of tasks can only be learnt by practise. However, the trend now is for Employers to look only for young people to learn skills of the job. Practical net making, rope work, longline and pot making will be learnt ashore while the use of fishing gear will be learnt at sea. You will also learn basic engine maintenance (filters, impellors), operating a boat, chartwork, firefighting, customary fishing, safety at sea and quota management systems. Theory will be learned in a classroom environment and based around NZQA unit standards.
Duration of Programme
This is a 44 week programme although it will be shortened, should the opportunity arise to be placed into employment or training in other areas.
If this appeals to you and you are wanting to upskill in any or all of these areas and make awesome contacts in the fishing industry then come talk to us.
